Ambient music and its brethren are often restricted to the land of headphones and armchairs. Its out-of-body idiosyncrasies – such as drawing from environmental tones – creates a reality that it is difficult to replicate a such a dynamic swath of musical layers in a live setting. But all hope is not lost. Far from it. Like-minded music enthusiasts will always find a way to coalesce, and one of the best opportunities this spring lies in Durham, North Carolina. Moog Fest.
Aptly titled after a titan of synthesis instruments, MoogFest is at its heart a tribute to Dr. Robert Moog and his influences upon the world of audio. Moog and his company have long been a unique and progressive group, so it’s of no surprise that their followers have often been inventive and curious sorts themselves.
By day, Moogfest is a platform for conversation and experimentation. This mind-expanding conference attracts creative and technology enthusiasts for three days of participatory programming in Durham, North Carolina. By night, Moogfest presents cutting-edge music in venues throughout the city. Performing artists include early pioneers in electronic music, alongside pop and avant garde experimentalists of today.
Unlike your average festival, where the focus is on getting drunk, selling merchandise and listening to music, Moogfest is all of this and more – a home for artists, engineers, musicians, scientists and futurists to enjoy themselves while tickling the prefrontal cortex.
This year, the dozens of compelling keynotes will will take part in the Future Thought sessions. Topics covered include everything from cognitive technology, afrofuturism, robot composers and symphonies, to interactive spatialization of sound and the future of our species. If such a heady brew isn’t enough, sit back and enjoy the Future Sound, the variety of musical spectacle that will include too many artists to list. Floating Points, one of those who’ll be performing live, is sampled above.
Moogfest 2016 starts Thursday May 19 and runs through the weekend, concluding on May 22nd.
