RFS Picks of the Week: August 19th

Greetings and welcome back to another addition of Red Filter Sounds’ picks of the week.

Far too often in the world of ambient music, listeners pigeonhole the genre as solely being abstract electronica, soudscapes, drone, or tribal in their construct. Fortunately, that is just the tip of the iceberg. While these artists certainly overlap into the more conventional aspects of what people expect, each does enough different that it provides something fresh.

0ID- Systems of Mercy

Back in 2004, Andrey Antonets of Moscow, Russia and member of Alexandroid, put out Systems of Mercy. 0ID utilized vocoders, percussion and analog sythesizers, amongst other instruments, to create a stripped down sound of ambient house music.

Cloudkicker – Let Yourself Be Huge

An excellent example of merging alternative and progressive rock styles into a more ambient package, Cloudkicker, aka Ben Sharp, has created a beautiful set of brief, but mesmerizing tracks with Let Yourself Be Huge. For fans of Mogwai, Iron and Wine, the XX.

Endless Melancholy – A Quiet Recollection

Switching gears one last time, Ukraine’s Endless Melancholy has compiled various tracks to a single record with 1631 Recordings. This, soft, somber music is rooted around classical piano, but the compositions are indubitably modern and provide a wonderfully bittersweet backdrop of melancholy to an evening of listening.
